A great day out when staying at Pennygate Lodge is a trip to
the enchanting island of Iona and also a boat trip to
Staffa. These can be visited on two separate trips or both
on the same day. The Isle of Mull, has hugely changing
scenery and has a different feel around every corner. Both
Iona and Staffa are very different again.
The forty
minute or so drive (or bus journey from our door)
along the winding road past Loch Spelvie and
climbing up into the mountainous glen which
stretches across the middle of Mull and then
dropping down to the the sea again at Loch Scridain
is startlingly beautiful. Then out to the Ross of
Mull with its incredible pink granite and white
beaches to the small village of Fionnphort on the
Sound of Iona. Here there is a Calmac Ferry which in
10 minutes takes you across to Iona with its abbey.
Please note that there are no Cars (other than
residents of the island) allowed on Iona.
The
island of Staffa is
about a 45 minutes trip from either Fionnphort or Iona. This
journey can be quite rough at times and it is not always
possible to land on Staffa, however the views of the Lava
formations and of course Fingal's cave from the sea are
worth the effort.
